Pit Boss is one of the most well-known brands out there in the market when it comes to Grills and Smokers. They have been rolling out some fantastic grills recently that comes with some amazingly convenient features.
One such model we recently got our hands on is the 700FB Pellet Grill by the brand. It is one of the most value-for-money pellet grills we’ve tried out in a long time, and we knew right after our first grilling session that this grill deserves a review of its own.
So, for all those of you that are looking to get a budget-friendly outdoor grill with tons of convenient features, here’s a detailed review of the Pit Boss 700FB to help you make your decision.
Pit Boss 700FB Review – What makes this worth buying?
Apart from being pretty affordable, this Grill comes with features that are quite rare in grills in this price range. Here are some of the features of the Pit Boss 700FB that we liked –
1. Excellent Build Quality and Ease of Assembly
Pit Boss is a brand that is dedicated to producing some of the most high-quality Grills and Smokers at extremely economical rates. The stick true to their motto “Where Quality and Economy Come Together” by ensuring their products are built with high-quality materials while keeping the price tag consumer-friendly.
The 700FB Pellet Grill by Pit Boss comes equipped with metal parts that are constructed with heavy-duty, thick-gauge steel which makes this model extremely sturdy. The grill grates featured in the model are made from cast iron which is coated with a porcelain glaze. This not only improves the heat retention of the Grill but also makes it easier to clean.
While most budget-friendly grills feature cheap plastic wheels that get damaged right after the first grill session, the 700FB Pellet Grills comes with sturdy steel wheels. However, the wheels do not come with any tread or groove, so moving it around uneven surfaces might be a little hard.
The Grill is also pretty easy to assemble with the instruction manual coming with very precise and easy instructions. You don’t require any expert skills to be able to assemble this Grill, although it will probably take you at least 1.5-2 hours to get the entire setup ready.
2. Great Grilling Performance
When it comes to grilling performance, the Pit Boss 700FB is superior to pretty much every other Grill we’ve tested out in this price range. It is incredibly versatile in terms of what type of meat you can cook in it as it comes with some highly convenient features that let you accommodate a wide range of meats.
When set up as a pellet smoker, this Grill can roll out some of the tastiest barbecues you can imagine. The Grill is also pretty big featuring a total cooking surface of 700 sq. Inches. It is big enough to accommodate a full brisket or several racks of ribs and chicken. The top rack can also be pulled out quite easily if you’re looking forward to cooking something like turkey.
The one feature that sets the Pit Boss 700FB apart from all its competition is the flame broiler feature.
The biggest problem with wood pellet grills is that they only use indirect heat for cooking food. This makes it impossible to flame sear steak and other types of meat. However, with the 700FB’s flame broiler feature, this problem has been taken care of by Pit Boss.
You can easily set the flame broiler feature of this Grill and cook your meat with direct heat just like you would using a traditional charcoal grill.
Another great feature of the Pit Boss 700FB Is its ability to cook food at over 500 degrees. This will allow you to cook pizza right on the rack easily. Now that is bound to spice up your next BBQ Party!
3. Huge Grilling Area
The Pit Boss 700FB features a massive total cooking surface of 700 sq. Inches. The main grill grate of the 700FB has a surface area of around 523 sq. Inches with dimensions measuring 27 inches by 19 inches.
The Grill also features a secondary upper rack with an area of 177 sq. Inches. You can use this as a warming rack or for cooking stuff like riblets. You can easily pull the secondary rack out in case you need to remove it.
The best thing about large grills is that you can cook a ton of meat on it. With 700 sq. Inches of cooking space, you can easily feed a ton of people in your next BBQ Party.
4. Easy to Use
I’m fairly sure that this model by Pit Boss was specially designed for all the lazy cooks out there who just want to set it and forget it. So if you’re someone that doesn’t like hovering around the Grill for too long waiting for the meat to get cooked, this is the product for you!
Cooking meat in the 700FB Pellet Grill is so easy that all you need to do is fill up the hopper and set the required temperature. Everything else will be taken care of by the Grill itself. It is especially great for slow cooking meat such as chuck roasts and beef briskets.
The temperature controls are also astonishingly easy to handle. It features a fully digitized temperature control board which does way more than just control the temperature. You can specify the type of cooking you wish to do and even set the burn length through the control panel. So if you’re a beginner to grilling, it’s a good idea to get yourself the 700FB.
5. Easy to Clean
One of the most annoying things that follow a BBQ Party is the inevitable grill cleanup which can be an absolute nightmare at times. However, with the Pit Boss 700FB, things might get a little easier for you.
The model is designed in a way that makes it very easy to clean. All you need to do is pull out the drippings cup and scrape the grates. Usually, that would be enough, but just in case it needs more, you can always soak them in soapy water. The grates are coated with porcelain which will prevent any rusting or corrosion.
The Pit Boss 700FB Pellet Grills comes with a One-Year Warranty that covers electrical faults and manufacturing defects of every component. However, the individual components such as the burn pots, probes, and gasket are not covered by a specific warranty.
What could have been better?
While the Pit Boss 700FB is absolutely terrific in terms of performance and build, it does come with its share of shortcomings. Here are a few things which we felt could have been better-
1. Lack of Mobility
While the 700FB by Pit Boss does come with sturdy steel wheels, they are pretty hard to maneuver due to them being one-directional wheels. The wheels cannot pivot or swivel at all so you’ll have a tough time moving it around.
The wheels also lack treading, which means they are pretty hard to move around on uneven surfaces or the grass.
2. Temperature Tends to Fluctuate
While cooking on the 700FB a while back, we noticed that the temperature of the Grill tends to fluctuate quite a bit. In our experience, the temperature fluctuated around 15 to 20 degrees from where we set it.
For a pellet grill in the low-budget category, this is not unusual. For most people, this slight fluctuation should not cause any problems whatsoever. However, if you’re very specific about your cooking, then it might be a little bothersome.
